We all know that feeling sitting in traffic in our car and the stress gets higher and higher. Our body does not recognise that we are in a traffic jam and reacts the same way as if we would be chased by a lion 2000 years ago.

that know stuff and a way to get around this. This leads us to understand what is going on and how to handle it. First thing is to know the difference between the sympathetic nervous system and the para sympathetic nervous system.

Alright, let’s have it!

Sympathetic nervous system is our fight or flight system and the one that is activated when we feel stress. It is also activated when we breath in.

Para sympathetic nervous system is our relaxing system and is activated when we breath out.

Easy peasy right? Yes!

So let’s do this and put some stank on it!

1. 3-6 breathing

As easy as it sounds, breath in for 3 seconds making your stomach rise and breath out for 6 seconds. Repeat this 3 times. I’m using this in the evening to calm down after work.

2. 4-7-8 breathing

Breath in for 4 seconds making your stomach rise, hold for 7 seconds and breath out for 8 seconds. Repeat 4 times. This is a good one for the traffic jams.

3. 3-6 focus in stress out breathing

Breath in for 3 seconds making your stomach rise while repeating the mantra focus-focus-focus, breath out for 6 seconds repeating the mantra stress-stress-stress-stress-stress-stress. Repeat 3 times. This is a typical morning routine to start the day relaxed.

These three breathing exercises activates the para sympathetic nervous system and relaxes us. If you need to breath more, repeat the set one more time.

Remember that you need to train to be better. My recommendation is to pick one of the exercises and at least try this every morning for a week.
